Herend Tang Horse Figurine - Limited Edition Size = 150
War horses were the pride of the Tang (AD 618-907), a dynasty of prosperity, military expansion and artistic achievement. Tang emperors were known for their openness to new ideas about art, religion, philosophy and music, unlike most Chinese dynasties which tried to cut off their empire from outside influences. Since the horse was so revered culturally, it was often the subject of artistic endeavors during this time. Among the most treasured Tang art figures were ceramic horses glazed in cobalt blue since they comprised such a small percentage of all Tang horses. Cobalt was an extremely expensive commodity from the Middle East that was even more valuable than gold. Its use meant the horse was created for someone of the highest rank.
While the price of blue has decreased over the years, the use of the color still renders this figurine the pride of any Tang nobleman. Sapphire blue fishnet combined with the blue coloration of the chrysanthemum pattern on the blanket offset by the 24K gold highlights throughout the body make for a very saturated and intense figurine.

Did their flamboyant, gregarious nature come first or did their vibrant pink feathers? Either way, roseate spoonbills are known equally for their colorful, unusual appearance (that large spoon-shaped bill) and their very social behavior. The artists at Herend have adhered to a faithful rendition but have naturally added distinctive Herend touches with a sparkling platinum fishnet pattern combined with meticulous details on the feathers to draw deliberate attention to this defining part of the spoonbill.

Herend holds a rich history spanning many years, crossing many oceans and charming generation after generation to enjoy worldwide acclaim as the pinnacle in supreme porcelain, also known as “white gold.” Now the biggest porcelain manufactory in Europe, Herend was founded in 1826 to produce pottery, but in 1839 a major turning point occurred when Mor Fischer became the manufacturer’s new owner. Taking Herend in an entirely new direction, visionary Fischer carved out the unique niche of producing dinnerware replacement pieces for Europe’s royal families to complement their valuable porcelain patterns from Germany and the Far East.
While the bird and the dance have the same name in Spanish (flamenco), the two are not connected. Yet, there is an uncanny similarity in the graceful and proud upright carriage that both embody and how synonymous the lower body has become with each. With the dance, the explosive stomping of feet imparts the passion of the story being told. For the bird, the stereotypical pose with one leg elevated is driven by less romantic incentives. The main motivation for curling the leg up under the body is thermoregulation- it keeps the foot warm and conserves body heat since the birds spend most of their day in water.
While it may not be the flamenco, Herend's Flamingo Duet presents 2 flamingos in a dance of their own creation. It also features the world-wide debut of a new symphony of fishnet colors in light orange, raspberry and rust. While flamingos don t eat carrots, it is the beta carotene found in their food supply that imparts them with such beautiful pigmentation. Ranging from light pink to bright red, the more colorful the flamingo, the more attractive he is to the opposite sex. It is also this brilliant display of color that gave rise to the name since flamingo has its origins in the French/ Provencal "flamenc" meaning "fire-bird."
