While the bird and the dance have the same name in Spanish (flamenco), the two are not connected. While flamingos don t eat carrots, it is the beta carotene found in their food supply that imparts them with such beautiful pigmentation. It is also this brilliant display of color that gave rise to the name since flamingo has its origins in the French/ Provencal "flamenc" meaning "fire-bird."

Named after the colorful robes of Imperial Chinese officers (mandarins), these fish are surprisingly shy considering their appearance. But in nature colorful rarely means life-of-the-party and these fish use their kaleidoscopic brilliance to alert others to their less than appetizing taste (they are covered in a smelly mucus that protects them from disease but also makes them taste bad).
